According to government data, 21 students who were enrolled in Central institutions, IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIMs, and IISERs died by suicide in 2018; this number dropped to 19 in 2019, 7 in 2020, and 7 in 2021.
image source:indianexpressThe government has documented at least 20 incidents of students who were enrolled in central educational institutes and died by suicide after seven months in 2023. Subhas Sarkar, the minister of state for education, made the announcement in front of lawmakers.
Sarkar was responding to inquiries posed by Kerala-based Rajya Sabha member Dr. V. Sivadasan. Sivadasan had questioned the administration regarding data for the previous five years on the number of students enrolled in central educational institutions who had died by suicide, broken down by social and economic categories.According to government data, 21 students who were enrolled in Central institutions, IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIMs, and IISERs died by suicide in 2018; this number dropped to 19 in 2019, 7 in 2020, and 7 in 2021.
However, the figure rose to 24 in 2022, and in the first seven months of 2023, 20 students committed themselves.
The number of such occurrences reported by IITs reduced from 8 in 2018 and 2019 to 3 and 4 in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the number rose to 9, and as of now, this year has seen 7 occurrences. 8 instances were reported at CUs in 2018 and 2 incidents each in 2019 and 2020. Although there were no cases reported in 2021,In 2022, 4 cases were reported, and as of this writing this year, 9 cases had been documented.
